Today is a sad day for Boise State, Hemet, and Emil Smith. Smith was a Boise State recruit set to play in 2011. His drive, passion, and skill was unquestionable. He was an 18-year-old linebacker out of Hemet, California. He'd received offers from the likes of Air Force, UTEP, Washington, and OSU before picking the Broncos. Last night, all those dreams came to a sudden end. Smith and friend Dimitri Garcia were killed in a head-on collision between their Dodge neon and a minivan at around 12:30 am. Police reports, as well as other news articles, state that Garcia, who was driving, lost control and flipped the median into oncoming traffic. The minivan was unable to avoid the crash. Both driver and passenger are alive and well from the van. It has also been reported that Garcia and Smith were speeding at the time of the accident. The cause is under investigation, but it looks like foul play, according to a few people (and myself). That being said, this is a tragic accident and I know I speak for everyone when I say our heartfelt condolences go out to Smith's family and friends.
